Nasal Sprays
One typical use of Nasal sprays is to reduce or eliminate nasal congestion. The nasal congestion occurs in case the blood vessels of the nasal linings get dilated. Nasal sprays are used to decongest or constrict the blood vessels in the linings of the nose Nasal sprays, therefore, reduce the congestion by minimizing the passage of the blood vessels. However, the decongestant nasal spray after couple of days use may become less responsive to the medication. In such cases, it is advisable to discontinue this medication for some time. During this period, one must take proper advice from the Doctor to adopt other methods of reduction of nasal congestion viz. steroid or saline nasal sprays, oral decongestants.
In fact, there are various types of nasal sprays, which are classified below depending upon their use:
- Nasal spray to combat histamines. These are only available when prescribed by a Doctor. It is normally used by allergic patients. It is also used to control irritation caused by environmental pollution including dust. It tastes bitter.
- Costicosteroids nasal spray. This is useful for the reduction of nasal congestion. It has anti- inflammatory effect and used for reduction of sinus inflammation. But it has many side effects like nasal irritation, even nose bleeding.
- Saline nasal spray. This is used to moisten the nose and loosen the mucus . This is a safe nasal sprays and may be used for prolonged period.
- Decongestant nasal spray. These types of nasal sprays are available over the counter and useful to tackle nasal congestion. But, it should never be overused since chances of addiction are there.
- Cromolyn sodium nasal spray stops release of histamine and also stops allergic problems. It has beneficial effect to control watery nose, itching sensation in the nose.
Side effects of nasal sprays
There is a stinging effect when you use nasal sprays. Some people may experience irritation because of the presence of preservatives in the saline nasal sprays.
