Nasal Polyp
Nasal polyp makes life miserable at times. Mostly the conventional medications fail. That makes the situation grave and you start feeling helpless. Normal symptoms include difficulty in breathing, constant dripping nose, smelling capability gets reduced. Polyps are nonmalignant growth inside the nose. When polyps develop, it obviously obstructs nasal air passage and creates breathing difficulties. Polyps sometime block drainage which may get stagnated in sinus cavities. Such situation of stagnation may lead to infection or sinusitis. The nasal polyp looks like grey colored lumps inside the nose. Instruments are needed for seeing it.
Symptoms of nasal polyp
Obstruction in the nasal passage, running nose, sinusitis, constant headache , breathing problems, stuffiness, thick and discolored nasal discharge, pain on the face at times, mouth breathing. People suffering from Asthma, Hay fever, Sinusitis, sinus infection, are more susceptible to nasal polyps.
Possible cause of Nasal Polyps
Exact cause is not yet established. But, a factor is considered as possible cause for the occurrence of nasal polyps is continuous inflammation inside the nose. The inflammation may be due to allergies or atmospheric allergen (dust, various pollutants) or sinus infection. Some researchers believe that this is the main cause for the occurrence of nasal polyps.
Too much accumulation of fluid substance in the membrane cells may cause polyp to swell which in called in medical terms as “edema”. The fluid bags may get enlarged and come out in the nasal cavities. Such fluid bags are called nasal polyp. Some of the membranes get infected when exposed to tobacco smoke.
Who is more susceptible to nasal polyp?
Adults of more than 40 years of age and children are more prone to nasal polyps if they are suffering from Asthma, Chronic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis and also inherited respiratory problems like Cystic fibrosis. Women are found to be more susceptible to nasal polyps.
