Misconception Galore
There is a misconception that the nose cleans by itself. Those cilia along with mucus arrests the bacteria that we inhale and remove them through swallowing process into the stomach where the acid takes care of them to extinction. And, that’s how the body is kept healthy.
But, we must know that the aforesaid is not wholly true and the aforesaid truth should be taken with a pinch of salt as one may say. The reason is in some conditions, the cilia slow down and that allows the mucus to thicken and bacteria to multiply and cause sinusitis. In the case of flu infection, the toxin will slow down the cilia and sinus infection sets in. That is why nasal irrigation comes into the picture so that cilia moves at appropriate speed.
Various widely known products marketed these days for nasal irrigation performs in that direction to achieve the objective of normalizing the speed of cilia. There are certain other things that help cilia to perform are the following: adequate intake of water and liquids, saline nasal spray (without preservative), hot tea, hot soup, hot compress over the affected sinus area.
The incidence of sinusitis is increasing at leaps and bounds which in turn aggravating asthma or leading to asthma. So, controlling sinusitis or preventing the same is a must in present daytime.
Irrigation for the removal of bacteria is recommended. Because even if all the bacteria is not removed, lesser the bacteria it is easy for the body to deal them even without the aid of antibiotics preferably. Using irrigation daily at home when bacteria is present , is not a bad proposition. But some cases it also does not help. Using a set pressure about one inch high from the sinus irrigator is strongly recommended. It has been seen , otherwise, that sniffing salt water vigorously may generate excessive pressure which may lead bacteria to ear with its serious consequences.
